Stewart attempted suicide. Mom found him in bed at her house and called me on 10/22. We were with him at the hospital until 4:45AM on 10/23/03. Then I visited him in the psychiatric unit at Samaritan Hospital a few times. I went to a family counseling session with him.

He took a large overdose of his mood stabilizer. As it turns out, there was little threat of death. Nevertheless, the traumatic effect on our family was the same.

He was upset that his pregnant wife, Carmen, left him in April. She had written a letter telling him that his contact with the baby was going to be limited. A subsequent telephone conversation is what pushed him over the edge.
